When my sciatica issues started and I got my MRI results, and I was peppering my husband with questions, he told me to google dermatomes. Suddenly, it all made much more sense, especially the physical exams I had where they ask you to describe and clarify your leg pain with questions like whether the pain is on the front or back of the leg, inside or outside of the thigh, if it runs down to the foot and if so, top of foot/bottom etc. All to try and help isolate which spinal nerve is being compressed.
