You rock fuzzymystic and all you other folks who are giving up the evil curse. I quit smoking 18 years ago after a few years of vicious bronchitis attacks and pneumonia. Initially I found it was minute by minute, then hour by hour and so on. I had tried the cutting back method several times----it didn't work. I hardly ever get chest infections anymore. The thing that bugged me the most was the number of smokers who still would offer me a cigarette even after I'd quit, and they knew I'd quit. One helpful tip I read (and then tried) was to stand in front of my mirror and say to myself---I am a non-smoker, or No thanks I don't smoke to people who offered me a cigarette. Sounds weird but it really worked. Now I wish I had saved up all the cash that I used to spend. (I think cigarettes cost about $11-12 per pack up here). There is no smoking in any public places indoors (private or public) so that really helps too.

Maybe I should have x-rays when I am well then to make sure that they are not missing anything.

I wasn't trying to make you paranoid, but maybe you ought to have some tests, in case there is anything there, they can find it early enough to treat it. But, lung cancer doesn't show up on x-rays too much, from what I understand.

I have never smoked (have my own issues-losing weight ) but wanted to share this as a little encouragement to those trying to quit. My mother quit smoking about 14 or 15 years ago after a literal lifetime of smoking (probably 50 years.) I think she started about age 14, and smoked heavily (about one pack a day or more.) Anyway, she didn't do anything special-just quit cold turkey. I NEVER thought she would quit-she had smoked sooo long, but she did. She wanted to try to get her blood pressure down. This doesn't give too much in the way of specifics but hope it encourages some of you that it can be done even after YEARS of heavy smoking.

I didn't read throught the whole thread...but when I quit it tried all the patches - made me dizzy at all doses. The gum - made me throw up and it took me three days to figure out it was the gum making me throw up. So I decided I just couldn't do it....unless I went cold turkey. Cold turkey lasted about 12 hours, then I wanted to hurt my husband (more than usual.. ) so I ordered as a last result Nicorette inhalers. THESE ARE GREAT! No dizzy, no vomit, easy to use and wean off of and my husband survived with out a scratch, which is saying something because we both quit at the same time! You can order them online a weeks supply costs the same as a carton of cigarrettes so they weren't any more expensive than continuing smoking. Good luck!

Prescription called Chantix worked for me. I smoked for many years..Believe it or not, I am still lung healthy, but was afraid of pushing it at my age..Plus I was the only one (besides one daughter) in the whole family still smoking. Chantix is expensive, but I wanted something with no Nicotine in it. They also have a good support group that emails me each morning..It only took me a few days to quit. My daughter quit cold turkey, and is doing great that way.

I've told my stories before about all the different methods I've tried to quit. I've been smoking now for about 38 years and I do feel it. I'm always short of breath. Sometimes I can't walk and talk at the same time.
I bought the Chantix about 2 mths ago and it's still sitting in my closet. I know about 3 people already who quit using the Chantix. I have no clue why I don't start taking the darn pills already!
