Ok...I really want to quit smoking. Right now I'm in my room and really want a cigarette and am trying not to have one. My husband is in here smoking. I havent told him when quit day is...I guess I havent told anyone because than I would have to commit to it. Anyway I am mentally preparing myself...Im leaving the room.

VPCATS...my dr. perscribed Chantix...my insurance wouldnt cover it. I have heard many people quit with it. Good luck!!!

I quit 3 years ago (used to smoke a pack a day). I read a book called

Allen Carr's Easy Way To Stop Smoking

He encourages you to smoke all through the book and then you have a ritual at the end where you smoke your last cigarette and hey presto you dont smoke again!

I was sceptical and only read this in bed. I never smoked in bed so when I got to the last page and it said go and smoke your last cigarette I really didnt want to bother getting out of bed to go downstairs to smoke but I did. I only smoked half the cigareet and found I didnt want it and stubbed it out and that is over 3 years ago now.

I lived in the Uk then and the book is available over there but you can get it on ebay too.

Your not alone, I had one to, my husband stressed me out, but I must say I am doing better. I am going to have my doctor call in to the drug store, Nicontrol inhaler, I think that will help me, because it is the action, and if I can just get enough nicotine to get me through the fuzzy times, I know that I can do it. I will keep you posted.

I have to say though that I have put about 20lb on since I gave up the cigarettes...BUT my heart rate is down and myblood pressure is down and they are more important than the weight issue (well that is what I keep telling myself)...

Plus I sitll get momnet and I stress they are "moments" where I could do with a cigarette though!

oh man, you guys can totally do this!!! Im smoke free for one year on May 24th. Its been a heck of a ride, I'll say that for sure!!!! You have to be ready and willing to quit, helped me to make a list of all the reasons i wanted to quit. And I was soooo fortunate my husband quit at the same time. I had smoked for 14yrs, at least a pack a day, somedays more. (ya'll are smokers, you know how those days are!!) anyhow, shockingly enough, i did it cold turkey. Im still shocked i did it. lol but what totally helped us, was we went on vacation for that week. Got the heck out of our house and daily habits. And a friend came over and aired the house out, got rid of all ashtrays/butts/lighters. Used febreeze and made our house smell good, and so when we came back, our house was smoke free too. It really helped. One thing that almost threw me off, but ended up helping me in the long run, was right in the middle of our vacation and hell week, we got the call that my last remaining grandparent died. Really tough too cuz he and I were super close, i was the youngest grandkid and he and I had a very special bond. Oh boy did I ever want a smoke after news like that!! but he ended up helping me in the end because I decided to dedicate my non-smoking new life to him. To turn to him in my heart when I was having one of those really tough times where youd happily trade your firstborn child for a single drag. I just pictured how disappointed he'd be if i started again. Still loving me dearly, but sooo disappointed in my choice. I tell ya, it sure helped me not smoke. Its not easy guys, you'll have to find what really works for you. I found it helpful too, when I really wanted one, was to get on the internet and look at the nasty pictures of blackened lungs and read the sad sad stories of those who have lost loved ones, or are now dying from smoking. Typically scared me enough to help fight the urge. Now my husband, he used the patch. He is in his mid30s, and get this, had been smoking since he was NINE years old. jeez. anyhow, he was about 2 packs a day, (or more) and he only used the first stage of the patch, ended up not using anything after that. And neither of us have had a single drag at all since our last day of smoking last may. You guys can do this!!!!! Get lots of support, talk it out, hey, you can even PM me every time you think you cant fight the urge, vent out on me, I totally get what youre going through and the hell it is. Believe in yourself.
Tiffany

I smoked for many years, was a very heavy smoker. Actually 3-4 packs a day! I finally decided that I had had enough and went to a doctor in San Francisco (I lived in Northern CA at the time.) She hypnotized me, used acupuncture and, as part of the treatment, gave me very heavy doses of vitamins to take. I mean MASSIVE doses of vitamins (in pill form). It worked, and worked well. I hate the smell of cigarettes and am probably the worst ex-smoker to be around!

She gave me general tips on what to do to keep from sneaking even one cigarette; Avoid anything with tomato in it (sauce, ketchup, etc); If you drink your coffee -or tea- black, change the flavor by addiung sugar or milk; If you drink vodka, change to Scotch (just change the drink). Most of all, STAY OUT OF BARS till you've succeeded... the smell of tobacco will set you off again. In time you can go back to tomatoes, etc.

I stopped in 1985, have never had even a desire to restart. One thing I once in awhile find myself doing, however.... reaching for my shirt pocket....

I have no idea if she still "cures" people, but her name is Dr Carolyn Price, a full MD. I sent several people to her and they also stopped. (Not sure I'm allowed to give out names on the forum, but what the hell)

Good luck to anyone that smokes. It is awful stuff and I really mean this; you will feel SO much better! Best of luck!

That means there is hope for me????? I am still smoke free and getting high off of the Nicotrol inhaler, maybe I am not used to this dose. I am still on the same one as of yesterday, it still has some kick to it.
Maybe just puffing on this stupid thing will be the help needed to quit, just have the reaction to having something to do with my hands. I can't wait to get through this first week, I will in no way ever go back to it, it is way to hard to give them up, and you learn to be just as stubborn as the control it has over you, just to fight the urge, but hey I am doing it, and I do my walks, and what ever it takes to get me past the withdrawl syptoms.
If you want to get high along with me get some Nicotrol inhalers, I noticed it is getting a little better today, and if nothing else it can be held between your fingers like a cigarette, the good thing is you won't burn anything with it. I am going to make it, I just need to stay away from others who smoke, and try to get me to light up just one. That is what happened last time, besides the stress in my life. I feel stronger this time, so hang in there with me, because I am going to do it!!!!!

I never heard of staying away from tomato products-wonder what's up with that? With the price of smokes nowadays, people have to be pretty generous to be offering them to others. They finally put the smoking ban into affect here in Ohio, although enforcing it might be rather difficult-have to have some really diligent non-smokers out there calling [well, who are they going to call? The police?] Guess we'll have to wait and see.
