my husband has had a serious illness for past 2 weeks MRSA attacked his spine and they are doing all they can. He has been on a respirator since last Sunday. He is taking breaths on his own but they feel like his lungs are not ready to go it alone. They are giving him a tracheotomy Monday. My question is can this poor man finally eat something or will he still be fed thru his nose?

Very sorry to hear about your husband, hope he is doing better soon.
People can eat solid food after having a tracheotomy, but really this is a question you should be asking your husband's physician, too much misinformation on a board like this.
If your husband is on a vent and is trached, he will not be able to eat solid food...If your husband had a permanant trach, that is a different story...acute trach, on a vent with a serious infection...not only will he be unable to eat, they are probably watching every calorie going into his body. Talk to his doctor.

I agree....given his current condition, MRSA in the spine and on a ventilator (even though he may be weaning off..) no food via mouth...sorry :-(
The next step they may approach you with is a PEG tube. The tube in the nose will come out and they will insert a different size tube into his belly from the skin (abdomen). this will take away the discomfort from the nose tube (ngt) and decrease the risk of him getting "aspiration pneumonia". with the tube in the nose there is risk of the feeding coming up into his lungs, the same risk is present with the PEG tube yet is is decreased.
Again talk with the doctor....if he/she is hard to 'find', you might want to get a case manager involved. they can arrange a 'family' meeting with you and ALL his doctors...
other tips, you may already be doing, keep pen and a notebook at his be3dside and write down the questions you have. Its very easy to forget them when the doctors bring up othher topics and such.
MY prayers are with you and your husband, another thought is if you can have someone like a close friend or another family member be there to help take notes when you are talking with the doctor.
My Boyfriend Had A trach put in four years ago and he is wanting to get it taken out is that possiable? I wanna have hope that it is. He was in an Accident and they told him not to smoke and he did and the result they put the trach in.Im Just Hopeing They Can Take it Out Its Not That he Cant Speak And Eat, I Mean when He takes It Out To Clean It He can Talk And Breath All though His Breath is Comeing Out Of The Trach Hole.
