You can google the ideal weight ranges for different heights, male vs. female and skeletal profile.

BMI isn't a perfect measure because it can miss a few people who aren't "overweight" yet still have too much body fat, not enough muscle and skeletal strength, due to inactivity. The flip side would be those who are "overweight", yet really are quite healthy because their weight is muscle, not fat.

However, it's generally true that BMI paints an accurate picture for over 90% of the populace.

Very true there - I was in better shape when I was 'overweight' according to BMI.

Does that sound about right?

Are you surprised at all?

I was.
It doesn't sound that bad for the men but if that's true for women, we must be a super unhealthy country. I'm over 10 lbs less than 170 lbs & I'm 5'11". My BMI is considered in the "Healthy" range. You're not going to tell me the average woman is taller than I am; I rarely see another woman as tall, much less taller than I am.

I agree; 170 lbs for the average woman is far more overweight than 197 lbs. for the average man. I look at it this way: I'm 5'6" and my husband is 6'2", so we are both above average height. Granted I am on the low end of normal weight and he's in the overweight (not obese) range, but he weighs one hundred pounds more than me (118 vs 220). If I weighed only 17 lbs less than him, I'd be enormous.

Look at pictures of adult men and women from the 1950's and 1960's. I see pictures of The Rat Pack (Frank Sinatra, Dean Martin, Sammy Davis, Jr., Joey Bishop and Peter Lawford) and think how slim and healthy they look. This was before fast food came along and people cooked meals at home.

I’m 510, 150 lbs, lift weights. At 132 I’d look emaciated… no thanks!

and no way would I get with a guy who weighs 130-168.. I guess we’re talking about shorter men here… I like my guys husky, barrel chested and sturdy. Over 200. Been married to a husky guy for over 18 years. My first bf was six seven and 260.
yep, each generation is getting taller, when the BMI was created the average height of a male was about 5ft8 today 5ft10 - 6ft is becoming average with a huge drop off at 6ft2.

Mine is 5'10" and 140 lbs. Total beanpole. I used to work out a lot. I could lift things he couldn't. I've tried to teach him bodyweight squats. He can squat but he can't get back up.

I don’t disagree. There are some medications that can also contribute to weight gain. Late last year, I went back on Mirena (lost 15 pounds after I had it taken out last time) and started a beta blocker for migraines and gained 10 pounds. The beta blocker in particular makes it really yard to burn calories exercising.
