Ahhhh Cristina I have seen that. Pams Dad is a diabetic and he had a bad infection and did those bottles threw that line just like you described. I am sorry you have to do that, but I am optomistic that it will help get you a fast recovery. Feel better!! I am dealing with those famous foot cramps tonight that make you scream!!!!

Hi Uoftlaw,

I had the same problem when they put the rod in my knee. I have the same thing again because they took the rod out. I have been stretching it as much as I can bear. It is only three weeks after the second surgery and I think the knee hurts worse than my leg. it will get better try to stretch it as much as you can, i know it hurts like hell....

I had surgery on the 24th of march. i have two screws on the left and nine screws and plate on the right. Two of the screws hold both bones together and should come out after four months. I went back to the doctor a couple days ago and was supposed to get the cast off and get the boot. still no weight bearing. But, when the xray was taken, the back side where the plate is not holding everything together, there was a slight offset so he put me in a cast for two more weeks. My doctor said it should go ahead and fuse together. I am a little bit scared that it will have to be rebroken and I have to start this process all over. has anyone been through this? I am sooooo tired of not being mobile. the injury is on my right side, so I can't drive. I feel very helpless....
thank you!

Welcome Sonya,
So sorry about your injury, but glad you found us here. You will find a lot of info and good support here while you are recovering. My injuries are a little different than yours, but I also injured my right leg/ankle and I know how you feel not being mobile and not being able to drive yet. My injury was on Jan 15, my OS just gave me the ok to drive 3 weeks ago.

Bones take some time to heal, so don't worry too much yet. Make sure you ask your Dr. tons of questions that you have. I would make a list and take it with me to my appts. because I was afraid I would forget to ask them all. Also , ask your Dr. about starting PT, I really feel the sooner you start the better. I wish I would have started a little earlier.

I was in a temp plaster cast for 2 weeks after my second surgery (Jan 28), then a fiberglass cast for 3 more weeks, then the airboot which I am still in for at least another week. (I got the boot on March 5).

Make sure you are eating right and getting plenty of calcium and vit. D. Find things to keep yourself occupied and keep up with this forum, it has helped me so much. It is great therapy!

Goodluck to you!

Post from a couple pages back: http://www.city-data.com/forum/8500177-post1410.html

Would really appreciate any help that could be given as i'm toying with the idea of agreeing to surgery/or not.
Hey Donkey,
My fibula was broken in twenty pieces, I am not exaggerating I counted them on my xray and they did nothing but line them up and they all healed. i do not have any discomfort with my fibula to this day. I had a rod and screws in my tibea that was just removed after a year and a half and a plate was put on my tibea from my knee to my ankle. The tib is the weight bearer so I am not sure why the Os is telling you you will never run? My Os said I will run , surf , snowboard and do all the things I used to. He said expect to be sore but other than that I will be able. I would talk to a second or third OS and see what their opinion is before you choose to do the surgery!!!

If your OS doesn't have time to explain things to you and you can't seem to get the answers you need, it might not be a bad idea to check with another OS for a second opinion, especially if you are seriously considering surgery. Goodluck and I sincerely hope you get some answers and continue to improve.

Thanks for the replies guys.

I wouldn't even know where to begin to get a 2nd opinion.

Everyone i speak to can't understand why it's not healed yet. Due to this they doubt it's a stress fracture.

I've spent hours & hours googling & read about possible irreperable stress fractures & can't help wonder if i helped make this a possibility for my case:

When i had the X-ray the day of the injury & was told there's no break, i assumed it was just terrible bruising.
The following week i played football/soccer again for 30mins & it was very very sore afterwards
I did the same the following week & when i woke the next day it was agony.

I can't help but wonder if playing on it the following 2 weeks did some permanent damage & this is as good as it's ever going to be.

Even my own GP can't understand how it's possible for me to NEVER run again. If that turned out to be true, i'd actually be going BACKWARDS as far as progress goes. My GP says i shouldn't go backwards. Maintain, yes, improve, possibly, but go backwards, no.

Right now, this is what i get.....

Running for (lets pick a figure) 30mins a time, say, 4-6 days a week will cause a pain in the fibula like a very deep & dull ache. I can continue to walk on it, but it's quite uncomfortable. It gets uncomfortable to the touch before it gets uncomfortable "just being there". Once you press on the point when it's flared up, it's quite tender like a deep bruise.
I'll then need to not run for a few days to let things calm down

What i'm hoping surgery would do....

As said above, i can run now, so i'd obviously like to be able to run post-surgery (allowing healing time). I'd also like to still be able to play football.
What i'm hoping for is that this strong dull deep ache brought on by running will eventually disappear after surgery.

If surgery cannot offer this then it's pointless. If there's a chance, then imo it's worth it.

Stinkydonkey,
I think if I were you, I would start by asking my GP who he/she would recommend for a second opinion, or even a third as Simms suggested. This is your ankle and your pain and it can possibly have an effect on you for the rest of your life. Take the time to find out what other specialist think before you make a decision about surgery. Also, go back a couple of pages and read post #1413, they got a second opinion with a very good outcome. I don't mean to sound bossy or blunt, but this is what I would do, or tell my children to do if they were in your situation. If your GP can't recommend a specialist, ask him/her where to start in looking for one on your own. Goodluck!

Hey all,
Welcome to all the newcomers. Just wanted to update on my progress. I have been working for a month now(i am a hairdresser). I started just working 3 hours a day because i am on my feet, now i am up to 8 hours a day. I am working 4 in the morning and then 4 in the evening. My pain gets less every day. i think being on my feet helps.Sounds crazy ha!!! I have been using a cane but now i feel like i don't need it other than to walk any distance. So hang in there all. A month ago i would never have thought i would be doing so well. it has been a rough ride and i know it is not over by any means. I feel everyones pain!!!

Stay strong all.

Joy
