Sunscreen, is it really all that necessary? (advantage, vitamins, cheap)

I was always bad about wearing sunscreen. Until I had to watch one of my best friends battle stage 4 melanoma. Now I always make sure I wear it, and I have yearly skin checks.
With regard to wearing makeup and having to re-apply sunscreen, I use a powder SFP. It allows me to re-apply and it also touches up my makeup. There are also spray SPFs that I can spray on my face and gently pat in if I'm okay with a dewier look.
I often wear long sleeve tshirts, some with hoods, when I’m outside. I prefer to cover up than to put on sunscreen. Light colored and loose fitting actually go a long way to keeping me cool, also.
I am almost 70 and have never used sunscreen. I have been burnt maybe twice. I guess I just have that type of skin that just naturally tans. Just lucky.
That's me and my mom. We don't burn. Just tan. My mom has never used sunscreen in her life, is out in the sun often enough, has wonderful skin, not as many wrinkles (she's 86) and never had skin cancer.
I'm hoping my fate is the same. But, yeah. I'm looking at Neutrogena Ultra Sheer dry touch, 100+ that's right in front of me. Sigh.
I've tried using them but I find most of them to be heavy, greasy and I hate the way it feels on my face. It leaves little pimples/bumps. I think they call it milia? Blech.
And you have to re-apply every two hours. I can't even apply it once! I usually forego using it at all.
It says it prevents the skin from receiving vitamin D from the sun so that's my excuse for not using it.
And I don't have fair skin or a history of skin cancer so...
Do you use them? And what's your favorite brand?
Using the wrong kind
And yes—everyone should be using it every day
I agree that reapplying it such a pain... I need to start being more serious with sunscreen myself. I recently developed some melasma on my forehead and it sucks. I'm currently using a vitamin C serum to fade it, so I hope I see results soon. I really need to remember to wear sunscreen, at least on my face, every day in the summer. If I will be out in the a while, I will just reapply the sunscreen on top of my makeup.
This would be impractical for women who wear makeup. It means they'd have to remove their makeup, apply the sunscreen, then re-apply their makeup every 2 hrs. I doubt anyone does that.
But yes, sunscreen is necessary. And you have to make sure it blocks both UVA and UVB rays.
Actually, if you use the right sunscreen and you apply gently using a patting motion you can apply it over make up and it won’t disturb it much. There is also a powder sunscreen that has a tint to it that you can apply over make up and it looks kind of like make up. https://www.colorescience.com/produc...-shield-spf-50
I don't know when sun-screen became a thing. Maybe in the eighties? Don't remember. I am a very fair-skinned old lady who has never used it. I was an outdoors gal as a young woman; canoeing, camping, spending time on and near the water, farm-work, and so on. Outdoors with Ra.
I have no skin problems. I think it is because I have oily skin or I am so far just lucky.
