I also slept in a hotel with a sleep number bed. The softest setting was still hard as a rock. At the check-out desk there were several people complaining about the awful beds.
I think it was Hilton Garden Inn that had the sleep numbers. But a number of other hotels sell their mattresses. Maybe do a round of staycations and see what you like before investing.
Bf likes the bed more than I do. I love the foot heaters and the tv setting. I just can't find the right number to not kill my lower back. If it continues, it will be returned

The right number exists. I don't know if you've tried the guidelines, but they're pretty good at helping you find it. Here's how I reset mine after we moved and had to rebuild the bed two years ago (we've had it for around 8 years):
Set your side to the lowest possible setting.
Lay down in the position you MOST OFTEN sleep in. If that's on your side, get on your side. If it's your back, get on your back. Etc.
Use the remote to run the "find my number" test (the test is actually built in, it's one of the options).
Adjust by "5" up or down as needed once you hit that number that seems perfect. It might not actually be perfect, but it'll be pretty close and a single click up or down will usually be all it takes to hit perfect.
Also - consider your pillow. If you have a bad back, and getting a new mattress isn't solving the problem, then the problem might be your pillow and not the mattress at all.
Lastly - don't sleep on the TV setting. That'll -definitely- give you back strain.
I think I'm getting used to it. I was out of town for 10 days and slept on beds that were so firm I was hurting so bad the next morning.
There's definitely an adjustment period with sleep number mattresses. There is any time you change "styles" of mattresses, but especially with one that gets "set" to the right adjustment for the user.
We tried sleep number. Never got used to them. Also too complicated.... returned them both.
Edit:
Forgot to add that they wouldn't let us return the adjustable base which was pricey....we bought twins that did fit the base but the automatic light won't work with anything but the sleep number. Disappointing.

Either you're not telling the truth, OR the remote wasn't working properly, OR it wasn't a sleep number (there are other brands of air mattresses).
The softest setting is a 25, which means you basically sink into it and the edge of the mattress starts to fold around you.
I have finally settled into the bed. We love the foot warmers!! Especially on cold CO nights!
