My right big toe is swollen and it seems like both sides of the toe are infected its all red and really really really sore it hurts alot, i think i have an in grown toe nail on both sides but it hurts to much mess with, the nail itself was turning white towards the back but now is doing ok, for a while the nail was really soft to tear off when it got long but now it hardly grows at all so i can get my toe nail ingrown out. what can i put on it? what do you think the problem is? i am putting paroxide on it for a while not it was helping the pain some but does not seem to be working as well lately. also a few weeks ago i took my sock off and it was like a pimple had popped on my toe in the side of it there was white stringy stuff that smelled on it. what can i do!? no insurance so doctor is last option.

You need to be evaluated for a paronychium (ingrown nail). Until you get to medical attention, use some hot soaks. But DO get to the doctor.

After a warm soak, you could wrap your toe with a piece of cotton soaked in tea tree oil .. a great fungal fighter, until you make it to see a doctor. It would take the infection down quickly.

You can purchase it in a health food store and it's quite affordable at about $10 to $15. I prefer the Thursday Plantation brand myself.

Does your toe also have like a white "sopt" around it? When you squeeze it does puss come out? and also is there somthing "growing" on the side of the nail right next to the skin?

Soak your toe in epsom salts.. In as hot a water as you can stand..It will soften the ingrown nail....You used to be able to buy a product called outgrow.. The foot doctors put an end to that company.. I have had numerous ingrown toenails and with what I advised you to do I have never had to go to a foot doctor...

Like the above poster stated, Epson Salts usualy help.
And I would suggest an antibiotic cream between soaks.
An infection that doesn't go away or gets worse is nothing to fool with. In a toe it can spread to the bone and cause even greater problems.
Hopefully yours wont get to that point and probably wont but don't put off getting help if you don't see improvement.

I"m guessing the original poster's toenail problem has been resolved since he first posted in June 2008. Also, since he's no longer a member, it isn't likely he'll be reading your advice.
