Dave1215,
Thanks for the tips on why they charge that much. The field that I am entering may suspend you for not paying bills, so I can't afford to not pay either.

Hi Morale Officer,
I agree that the EMT speaking to me isn't getting rich, but I doubt that the company owners are hurting for funds, I also suspect corporate greed affects my bills. However, I will hush since I haven't audited their records. But that is on my to-do list (very long to-do list!)

Night Night!

When I fell and broke my leg, the ambulance came from the fire station about two blocks down the street. They took me to the hospital about a mile away.

Even though my taxes payed for the ambulance and the salary of the firefighters and EMTs who came, I still got a bill for $800.

Your taxes don't always go to pay the salary of the EMTs and Paramedics. Firefighters? Yes, you do help pay them, but not always those of us on the Ambulance. Also, the bills can help supliment operating costs not covered by money from the local governments (aka, equipment used, medications given, etc.) Think of it also as a way to keep the taxes down. I'm not trying to be difficult or say that bills are right or wrong, but as a Medic, it's nice to be able to keep my truck stocked to try to help the next person that needs an ambulance. And I do agree, the only people that seem to get rich in emergency medicine are the "big-wigs" at the top of the food chain in the oil companies and insurance companies, but I didn't get into this business to get rich. Like I said, I'm not trying to be difficult, just giving everyone the other side of the equation.
