On the Tyra Banks show a while back they talked about skin bleaching. Common among the black women in the black community. There are actual skin creams you can buy to bleach your skin. I asked a friend at work about it and she said that their is something among blacks called coloring. That light skinned black people are better then a dark skinned black people.
To me this is interesting. I would love for a black female to comment about this.

They making this things up to make black people look bad. I nearly no any darkskinned black people how are bleaching their skin here in holland. People always think that everyone wants to be lighter, but that isnot treu. Skin bleaching is a much bigger problem in asia then with afro´s.

That's because products aren't readily available in Europe. I know there are other substances, but perhaps the most effective, hydroquinone, is banned in the EU.
Skin bleaching or whitening is also popular in the Philippines. A lot of Indians are also obsessed with making themselves look whiter. Lighter people are even preferred for marriage. Bollywood stars are obviously relatively fair for Indian standards.
The original poster was probably referring to the black community in the US. 12.8% of its 300+ million people are black or African American (there is a difference between the two, most are black).
I didn't know people in India bleach their skin. Now that I think about it, I could be forgiven for thinking Indian women were lighter than men based on the Indian movies and music videos I've seen.

Women can also use makeup. Also search for "fair and lovely". There are naturally fair-skinned individuals in the very north of India, mostly Kashmir. I have a few Indian friends and they told me even girls prefer lighter guys. There's definitely a hierarchy, although the caste system is not as it once was.
I live in the Philippines and am struck by the predominance of skin whitening cream. Larger than life billboards, tv, there is a lot of focus on turning white. As someone who brought self-tanning lotion (the newer generation of Nivea etc products) to try to look "healthy" despite a tied-up-in-the-office lifestyle, I found that here the shelves are full of skin whitening lotion.
I'm told that it works, and that it contains an element found in chemotherapy. So there IS an explanation to Michael Jackson.....!

Correction - Skin bleaching RARELY EVER happens in the Afro-American community. Now it's a different story for other Black nations and ethnicities.
Actually, I work with several black women and today we talked about this. All of them said this is pretty common. But it depends on where you live I guess?
