When I lived in Pacific time, I got 7 hours a night and felt fine. After I moved to Central time, I get 5-6 hours and feel sleepy in the afternoons. It's been 4 months since the move and I can't seem to fall asleep before midnight.
I've lived in Central time for most of my life. 5 years ago we moved to Eastern and my nightime shutdown is still in proportion to Central time. We don't get news here till 11pm and that keeps the cycle going unfortunately. Consider that when the news is on here at 11 it is on in Chicago at the same time but it's 10 there. I suspect after 5 years I may never adjust.
I used to toss and turn and fret getting to sleep; trains, planes, industrial park noise (Chicago is noisy) would keep me up and thinking. I found the later I stayed up the easier it was to fall asleep.
I saw somewhere that it takes the average person 20 minutes to fall asleep. If you take longer you are fretting over stuff and if faster, you're exhausted!

I guess I'm doing a lot of fretting over stuff then. Hmmm....
I usually fall asleep within minutes if that long. I sleep maybe 5 to 6 hours and its interrupted sleep, but I fall right back to sleep. I may feel a little tired in the am but usually not and maybe for abit in the afternoon, but usually I am fine.
Six hours usually. Last Thursday I woke up at 3:30 a.m. - wide awake, after going to bed at 11:00 the night before! That happens way too often, and if you have to get up two hours later, it's impossible to take sleeping pills. I've been an insomniac my entire life, though, so I've learned to deal with it.
I sleep about 5.5 -6. I've never been a very good sleeper. I dream alot and that usually wakes me up. My husband gets about 4.5 -5, he gets up for work at 3 am and never seems to get to bed before 10.

SandyCo, How do you deal with it?
I never get to bed before midnight, no matter what, or how hard I try. And am up at 5 am... and go thru the morning like a zombie. Coffee does nothing to perk me up. Does warm me up though. No, I don't drink too much either. 1 cup regular in the morn, and afternoon, 1 cup decaf- If I remember to.
Never tried any sleeping pills either- they say make sure you are able to sleep 8 hrs.. and I keep thinking 'Duh, if I had 8 hrs, I wouldn't need the pills!'
I have no choice but to get at least 8 hrs. I take anti-depressants at night, two of which are like freaking tranquilizars and not only do they knock me out about an hour after taking them but if I wake up too soon I have terrible double vision that limits me from driving into work. Might not sound too bad but it sucks having to go to bed around 9:00 each weeknight.
8 hrs, but due to bad habits and a late body clock, only got to sleep at 3:30am this morning, with alarm set for 7:00am to give another hour of sleep before 8:00am to then get prepared for university lecture at 09:00am. Some alarm woke me up at 09:00am, but mistook it with the 7:00am alarm and stayed in bed for another hour, which turned into 2 hours, then three. Got up at 12:05pm having missed lecture (9:00-11:00am) by over an hour. Typical day in the life of me.
I get about 6 hours if I go to bed early enough. I take medication that for some reason makes it very hard for me to fall asleep. Once I get to sleep I am out til morning. I used to sleep 8-9 hours easily but not now. I would love a night of sleep that lasted 8-9 hours!
I usually shoot for about 7.5
Any less or more usually makes me feel a bit tired.
Sometimes I get by on 6 tho.
