Anyone who has truly had influenza will always get a flu shot. The flu is not a bad cold or a 24 hour stomach virus. Influenza is a knock-down-drag-you-out horror that leaves the victim a lumpy pile of goo, often for weeks! Trust me...I used to whine when I had a bad cold...then I got the FLU. I have never missed a flu shot since.
My wake-up was the Flu of "69-I had never in my life been as sick and I swore never again. Ten yrs. later forgot the shot-busy w/newborns,etc and got hit again-so every year. I'd rather be safe than sorry.
I laugh when people miss a day or two of work and say they had the flu. I have a saying..."You think you've had the flu until you get the flu." That's when you realize you never had it before.
I had it once...got sick right around Thanksgiving and the first day I actually got dressed in real clothes after that was Christmas Day. I was sick in bed for 6 weeks with an infant to care for, then I still didn't feel well for another 2 months. Awful....just awful.
Yeah...I get the shot!
I don't know why and nobody has ever been able to explain why, but when I get the shot I'm sick for weeks at a time. When I don't get the shot I'm fine, and IF I do get sick, I'm only down for a couple of days. For me it's a simple math problem..... sick for weeks or for a couple of days.
I've had the flu shot 3 times and 3 times I've gotten influenza. Each time I was told it was a strain not covered by the shot. Is it just a coincidence that I've never gotten influenza in years I didn't get the shot?? Well, this year after several years of not getting the shot I gave in to my dr and got one. My husband gets the shot every year and has never had influenza or side effects.
I rarely get the flu. (knock on wood) Got it only once, about 10 years ago - real bad, if I had a compromised immune system I would get the shot for sure. This bout would have killed an old person.
Spouse is pretty susceptible to anything that is floating around and gets a shot yearly and manages to avoid it.
I used to get them every year and every year a few days later I'd have flu like symptoms. I stopped getting them 3 years ago and havent been sick since!
