Default Sleep Apnea?

Often times I wake up in the middle of the night and I can't move my body. Only my eyes can open and it takes every ounce of my power to move my arms or even open my mouth. It's like half of my body is still asleep even though my eyes are open and I am fully aware of what is happening around me. Could this be some type of sleep apnea?

I have to start breathing heavily to get the rest of my body to "wake up". This doesn't just occur during my regular nightly sleep but also when I take a nap or doze off during the day.

If you have to breath heavily (increase your oxygen in your blood) to get moving, I would say sleep apnea. Go to your doc and request a sleep study... Do you smoke or are you overweight?

I am a respiratory therapist and agree that you may want to get tested...but your problem sounds more like night terrors or sleep paralysis. They are pretty common.

No, I don't smoke and I'm not overweight (200lbs and 6'1" isn't overweight is it?). I'm definitely making an appointment to get checked, but this is a pretty recent occurence so I am wondering if it's just stress or something else. I'm not really under any stress though so I really have no idea. It's just really weird and it freaks me out!

Thanks for the advice guys!

Question about sleep apnea:

How do you know you have it if you're alone as it has to do with loud snoring? I worry about my brother who lives alone and has stayed over and snores loudly.

KHaring, after I read your link about sleep paralysis that is EXACTLY what happens to me! I've even hallucinated that someone was in the room when I was sleeping. It says that it's a rare occurence but it happens to me quite often.

People can snore and not have SA. But if he feels really tired all the time, morning headaches, wakes up gasping for air...the only real way to get a diagnosis is to have a study done...They monitor heart rate, facial movement, brain activity, nasal air flow etc etc...so if he wants a conclusive diagnosis...sleep study is the way to go.

Does sleep apnea develop over time, or is it "one day you don't have it, the next day you do"?

I think it gets worse with age and weight gain, if you drink alcohol. I remember being younger and sometimes waking up gasping for air, now i snore like a freight train apparently. I'm restless when i sleep too, especially after beer or wine. I've cut that out and it seems to help. I'm trading my cpap in for an oral appliance. I hope it works.
