Why consult a nutritionist/physician??
Why do so many say "consult a nutritionist and/or physician before losing weight"???
I can understand this statement if someone is making immediate and very drastic changes to their diet, but how many people actually do this? When it comes to weight loss, discipline to make those drastic changes all at once seems to be one of the most difficult hurdles.
If the idea is to change your daily diet for life, what's to consult a nutritionist about? It seems pretty simple..cut out the sugar and fats, eat everything in moderation, and take in more fruits & veggies.
As long as you eat your foods in moderation and mind portion control without going overboard, what more can a physician/nutritionist tell you that you couldn't read in a book or on these forums?
If you make the decision to say "hey, tomorrow I"m going to stop eating those Oreos and start eating carrots", what's the harm in making that decision on your own without consulting a dr?
I mean...we're all human. It seems we should instinctively know or be able to educate ourselves as to how to eat without being gluttons about it.
Sorry, that question has always bothered me a little.

With all due respect your a perfect example of the problem we have in America....Most fat is not the enemy...its the excess carbs that are making Americans fat, lazy and dumb...lol. Bread, pasta, potatos, rice, cookies, ice cream, cake, fruit juice, soda...etc..
For years everyone has been told avoid fat, yet everyone keeps getting fatter.

On exercise DVD's it always says to consult a doctor before embarking on any exercise regimen. It's just something that doesn't really mean anything. You never have to ask some person that has an MD's license for their permission to do anything in life. Happy eating.

I wonder if it's because someone/somewhere will lack common sense, get injured, then blame the diet on their injuries and sue?

That is the exact reason. There are alot of people out there who blame others for thier own idiocy, and the sad part about it is they win. Example, guy buys an RV, guy decides cruise control is equal to autopilot, guy puts RV in cruise control and gets up to go to the bathroom. Needless to say RV crashes and guy gets seriously injured. Guy sues, judge rules in guy's favor because no where in the owners manual does it say RV cruise control will not drive the RV completely. And this my freinds is why you see warnings such as "Do not iron clothes on body," its not because they just randomly decided to be funny... its because people can be stupid.

Some people may have health issues that might be corrected through the advice of a naturopathic physician, rather than a regular doctor who would prescribe drugs. Some people are not in the frame of mind to "read a book" on nutrition - therefore they might benefit from an extensive evaluation from the nutritionist/physician and IMHO it would be money well-spent!
Yes, optimal health is a lifestyle and no fad-diet can maintain it. All the answers are at your fingertips

It's just a "CYA" type of thing... if someone decided to do Richard Simmon's videos over and over for 10 hours straight and had a heart attack, then they might decide that Richard Simmons is to blame and sue him.
And then there is also the philosophy that if you don't have a doctor's recommendation about something, then obviously you are going to succumb to some horrible illness or injury.

So many people do not understand what is good food/bad food. I saw a nutritionist back in the 80's and she warned me to stay away from partcially hydrogenated oils, they are bad for you.. I had never heard of them so I started reading lables and it was in just about everything. (Yet, they continue to allow it in our food? I have to ask WHY?)
Each person's body is different and their nutritional needs could be different, say a diabetic, someone with high blood pressure, heart disease.. All would require a diet suited to their condition. A nutritionist could explaine to them what their needs are.
To me, that is should be the first coarse of action before any medication are ever considered and I have wondered why it is not. I am a cook and you would be surprised how many people ask ME (and have for years) what they should/could eat to loose weight. People are so clueless. There are those that want to know how to eat healthy but the majority do not care until they have a health issue to deal with.
Over the last 3 years, I have lost 45 pounds (that I gained while on statin drugs) and lowered my cholesterol by eating healthy and EVERYBODY want to know how I did it, telling me they want to go on the diet I was on. I couldn't count how many people I have had to explaine how I did it.
