Because I was stationed overseas during the time of the madcow outbreak, the blood services will not take my blood. I use to donated three times a year every year. Now once a year I go to the offices and ask if I'm allowed to donate and each year they tell me no. It doesn't take long and it hurts no worse than a flu shot. Call your local office to see if they're open the day after Christmas and go that day to donate. They're going to need your blood with all the drunks on the road during the holidays.

Sorry you're not able to donate, and thanks for trying.

Blood is very scarce this time of year.
My dad had blood cancer, needed blood every other day.
There were times he had to wait for blood, for someone sick to begin with, having to wait half a day was the pits.

For anyone thinking of donating but having problems with wondering who is getting it; if you want it to specifically go to kids or cancer patients

Check your local cancer center if there is one.
Check your local childrens hospital.
You might be able to donate directly.

I haven't donated in a while because I was anemic for quite some time... but last time I had a physical, my iron count came back fine, so I should go donate again. I'm O negative, so I know that my blood type is in demand. Thanks for the reminder!

I'm O+. Not as universal as O- but pretty close.

I've donated 15+ gallons, all platelets. That is more involved, takes around 70 minutes for 2 or 3 units. Once a year, usually December, I donate a unit of whole blood to get my iron levels down. In January I'll be back in there with my sleeves rolled up.
