Not because I have to or because its cool, it just so happens to be the only five minutes of relaxation I get all day. And as for weak minded, I'm thinking most of you tools drink a few cans of soda pop everyday. Am I supposed to believe that its not because its addictive? And really, which do you think has a bigger toll on your health? I mean, god, these lame social networking/forum/blog sites could even be considered addictive (and I have a feeling I'm speaking to a few addicts right now). So take your "Holier Than Though" attitude and shove it. I don't criticize you for not smoking so STOP BRINGING IT UP!
We get it....you're angry

I'm sure you don't "have to" smoke, you could probably quit anytime you wanted to

Personally I don't care if you choose to smoke or not, as long as you don't do it around me.

But the line about which takes a bigger toll on your health, cigarettes or soda???

You are joking right??

Lets see smoking is associated with diseases like: lung cancer, head and neck cancer, bladder cancer, COPD, heart disease, peripheral vascular disease, glaucoma, etc, etc, etc

Drinking soda is associated with diseases like:.......oh yeah....there aren't any diseases associated with drinking soda

Why should you care whether he gets it or not. I'm a smoker that started way before all the warnings were in place. Most smokers fail at quitting and if it kills them that means more SSI for you! If I were 13 and considering starting smoking today I would have more sense than I did in the 60's. We don't want to hear it...we know it all and don't need it constantly pushed in our faces. If you are out and a smoker's smoke is bothering you it is your right to speak up. Until that smoker is me...leave me alone.

Don't kid yourself, you like it because you are ADDICTED to it. I have tried it and it takes like crap, and there is nothing enjoyable about "smoking". It's the Nicotine in it that makes you like it, don't kid yourself! (If you don't believe me go buy some Herbal Cigarettes and smoke those for a few days and see how long you last...) And you will suffer because of it and have a lot higher chance of getting sick over it. Sure we all will die, but I want to try and live ~15 years longer than I would being a Cig addict. Plus all the time and money wasted? 5 min for each cig, you do the math. Life is too short, especially for you bud.

us smokers are very tired of hearing the same speaches over and over again, yeah yeah smoking takes 10 years off your life, whoop de do, seriously, most nonsmokers bother the crap outta me, i smoke, and where i work i have to go outside to the nearby bench to work now because you non smokers complained enough to get it banned from almost every building here in PA, and i swear to god once one of you people even attempt to lecture me about smoking in the path of other nonsmokers im going to tell you its your own damn fault, why? my workplace can no longer have a private out of the way smoke room anymore, because of you

you smokers may have your right to "clean" *coughcoughEXAUSTFUMEScoughcoughINDUSTRIALEXAUSHTc oughcough* air, however i also have my right to my smoke, and since you people have o so easily taken smoking from buildings, you can deal with all of us who now are forced to smoke outside of our workplaces, dont like it? walk around, cuz that is what im going to tell you when you complain at me

sorry if ive ticked off a few people but you nonsmokers own pretty much everything anymore

and its honestly no help from the government either, all they do is raise the prices of the things, that aint gonna stop us, i mean if you want us to quit, leave the tobacco prices alone, lower the prices of the STOP SMOKING AIDS... seriously, even with the recent price upage of smokes its still cheaper to buy the smokes than to buy the stop smoking aids, cheapest carton of smokes right now is $28, and cheapest equivalent amount of stop smoking gum, patches, pills is damn near $40, do the math, cuz quiting cold turkey is hard and rarely ever works

in the famous words of denis leary " 'smoking takes ten years off your life' so? its the 10 worst years isnt it folks, its the adult diaper, wheelchair dyalasis f#&^@^&* years, TAKE THOSE YEARS WE DONT WANT 'EM!" and "keep raising the prices, we'll break into your f@#*(^@, houses to get the f*#@^&(@& cigarettes, theyre a drug were addicted!!!"

and now that ive pretty much repeated the very first post i made on this site, i bid you a good evening, morning, afternoon or whatever it is where youre at

Sure there is because soda pops are a factor in obesity and all the health problems which flow from that.

Think I'm wrong? Just wait. They're only just getting started on "proving" that junk food (including sodas) is so bad for you that it has to have some kind of government action to address the "crisis."

See what's been done to smokers? You're next!

Live 15 years longer to do what? Slowly deteriorate from old age and end up staring at the ceiling in the rest home? Thanks, but no thanks.

And, by the way, if you do everything "right" and avoid all the "bad" stuff, how can you know you've succeeded in living "longer" if you don't know how long you were going to live in the first place?

You're only talking about odds as there is literally no way to prove anyone actually lived longer or shorter lives than they were supposed to. It's a con game we play on ourselves to support the foolish notion that we can control our own destiny, that our death, and the manner is which it happens, is controllable by us. It isn't.

More typical rationalizations from a smoker....

What, you think you won't deteriorate from old age as a smoker?

Are you just going to magically drop dead in your sleep at 75 because you smoke and miss out on the pleasures of infirmity?

Most smokers are going to "deteriorate" as well, just at a younger age.

Dying from COPD isn't a pleasant way to go, hooked up to oxygen for the last years of your life, struggling to breathe, unable to walk even a few steps without gasping for air...

Lung CA isn't a walk in the park either...one of the more horrible ways to go

Sure you could do everything "right" and get hit by a bus tomorrow or you could smoke 2 packs a day and live until 80 and die in your sleep (amazing how every smoker knows someone like that isn't it?)

But the "odds" are smoking will get you in the end.....and it isn't just the years it takes off your life, its the life it takes out of your years..

Thank you. At least somebody gets what I'm trying to say here.

Also, OF COURSE I'M ADDICTED! Just because I'm addicted doesn't mean I don't enjoy it. I'm also addicted to video games and caffine (along with most of you).

Furthermore, I do enjoy smoking more than I do life. I mean, what's so great about living anyway? Life is a constant struggle to try not to be bored. Honestly, if it wasn't for tobacco and marijuana I probably would've killed myself years ago.

I guess I probably could go to college, get a 9-5 in an office, go to sleep after the 10o'clock news, and read the sunday paper. I wouldn't smoke or drink, I could just sit around and talk about how much I love Special K. But you know what? That just sounds aweful. If I die when I'm 60 and I enjoy myself 'til then I don't see the difference.

Quality over quanity man.

Nice try....

Soda isn't inherently harmful.

1 or 2 sodas a day isn't going to lead to obesity for the vast majority of people.

Cigarettes are inherently harmful, there is no safe exposure limit.

Again, the only product sold that if used as directed will kill you.....

To each his own I believe. My only personal issue with it is that it has been said second hand smoke is more harmful than direct smoking because of the lack of a filter. I have a hard time when kids come in our office for asthma and respiratory problems and when you walk into the exam room, the room reeks of cigarette smoke and the parents cannot figure out why their kid is sick and/or having a difficult time with his breathing. If someone needs to smoke, then at least keep it in a well ventilated area, meaning outside, not around others who choose not to be exposed to it or children who cannot fend for themselves.
