I've known my type since I was pregnant with my first child. It's A+. I always laugh & say that's just because I'm an A+ type person Just asked hubby and he doesn't know his although he donated plasma for 3 years before we moved to a town that doesn't have a plasma donation place. I am lifetime exempt from any donations due to an autoimmune disease. For plasma donation one gets paid anywhere from $50-$70 a week (near here anyway) depending on where you are, that's donating twice a week. For some reason my hubby got a little less in Montana than my son-in-law does in Wyoming. It's a nice way to help the medical world and to also bring in a little extra money. Anyone could use a couple hundred or more a month! And it's tax exempt. Bio-Life (where hubby & SIL go) pay now by way of adding to a prepaid debit card. They used to pay cash, but stopped that awhile back. You get paid less the first time you go during the week and more the 2nd time. You can only do twice in a 7 day period and there are some rules about how many days between, etc. I don't know the specifics, but I know it's a good thing all the way around!

What's interesting is why do we have 4 different blood types in humans and since these have been around since humans first inhabited the earth what's the purpose besides blood transfusion as we didn't first start to transfuse blood until the early 1800's.

Well going to Pubmed (U.S. Gov Site) i learned a few things about them and that is our blood type is also found in all our fluids in the body i.e. saliva, seminal, vaginal and tears with the exception of the spinal fluid.. They are also found in the epithelial cells that line our intestines that comes in contact with the food we consume and also in the cells and mucus that line the inside of our nose. And our blood type can carry 2 types of antibodies i.e. IgG and IgM that are very specific to attack foreign pathogens that can enter our body.

So for example my blood type-O is in all my body fluids and also lining my intestinal tract and inside my nose etc. and not just in my blood. So i'm quasi guessing here but i believe we have one of the 4 ABO blood type's in us as evolution created these to protect us from pathogens for hundreds of thousands of years that humans have been on the planet.

Its not something you have to know....

If you are ever in the position of needing blood its not like some one is going to take your word for it as to what type you are.

Your blood would be typed and screened and then crossmatched against donor blood to make sure it doesn't react.
