A Medical Curiosity... desert climate affect dry eye?
My 14yo daughter suffers from some type of extreme dry eye condition. She is miserable much of the time, although it has gotten much worse since the cold weather set in. I have taken her to six specialists, none of which have been able to give us a definite diagnosis, except for to say that it is not allergies. She has no redness, tearing, itching, etc. Her vision is perfect, no neuro problems, and her eyes look perfectly normal, they just hurt on the surface all the time.
Now here's the weird part. The only time that her eyes ever felt normal and pain-free was when we flew out to Vegas last March and drove across the high desert of CA to San Diego. As soon as we got off the plane in Vegas she felt better. Can anyone figure out why this would be? Do you know of anyone else who had this problem and was helped by the climate out there? Could it be the warmth, since the air is dry there and it seems like, if anything, it would exacerbate a dry eye problem?
Sorry this is so long, but if I find any evidence that it really was the climate that made the difference, I am going to fly out there with her again very, very soon and see if she gets relief again. If so, we will need to look at possibly moving out there, because this affects her to the point where she can't do anything and has to keep her eyes closed most of the time.
