Default Any downside to nitrous oxide for oral surgery?

I've never used it before. I have to have a molar pulled. I think its pretty straightforward...no absess, no impaction. I get very tense even before a dental cleaning so I'm thinking the gas might be good for this extraction. Will I be able to drive myself home afterward? The dentist said the extraction itself takes less than 10 minutes so I'm wondering how long it will take the gas to wear off?

NC55 is on a distinguished road
It clears up pretty quickly -- within seconds (or minutes at most) when the supply is stopped. You will have no problem driving. It will make you relax, and the time seems to pass very quickly though you are still awake.

The two down sides I can think of are:
1. Many dental insurance plans don't pay for it. It costs around $70-90.
2. It's not safe if you are pregnant.

It relaxes you, but it does not take pain away. As soon as the gas supply stops, you recover very quickly like the other poster said.

I had it for a minor root canal and was fine afterwards. My hubby only drove because I took valium beforehand. I've never had any reactions to it.

Nitrous is particularly nice because of its fast onset/offset and the lack of lingering effects. It DOES have mild analgesic properties, but it's not strong enough to replace conventional anesthetics.

There are no lasting effects really. You'll be a bit loopy for a bit afterwords but not long.
