The Shriners have done a lot of wonderful fundraising over the years but the main body of members is aging and dying off. They never really changed with the times, and young people seem less inclined to belong to fraternal organizations to begin with. From what the article said, all the patients will still be taken care of at other facilities, and they have been supporting these institutions mainly with the proceeds of their endowment, not the contributions from members.
Things change, but we sure ought to be grateful to the tens of thousands of Shriners who did so much good.
