Default Why do some doctors...

come across as arrogant?

Yes, confidence and self-assurance are good traits for a doctor & we want to know that our doctors are confident about their work and are positive about their abilities to help us. But wise patients understand that there is no room for arrogance, narcissism or condescension from egotistical medical professionals.

Last summer, I experienced food poisoning not once but twice & that led me to develop a stomach ulcer...the physician I saw was with not the friendliest lady...in all honesty, I haven't had very many positive experiences w/ doctors or many people in the health professions...but I'm not dismissing all of them as rude.

Have you experienced rude, arrogant encounters with a physician? How did you react to it & why did they behave this way? Thank you.

I guess sometimes it could be their personality or lack of; which would be the case regardless of their profession.
I have encountered a couple of doctors so incredibly rude though that I had to say something. Firstly if I'm at the doctor's office, I probably feel really bad or else I wouldn't be there. Secondly if I'm there it might be to get test done or test results; in which case my nerves would be frayed. So when this happened, I said to the offensive jerk-"Are you having a bad day or are you always such a condescending jerk?" One laughed and apologized. The other time it happened, with another doctor and I asked him that, he behaved even worse. So I explained to him that I felt our personalities clashed and I would not be coming back and would contact them as to where to send my records.
Who the hell needs that treatment.
Oh and the real jerk one-I also asked him if he thought the visit was free because to my knowledge I was paying big bucks and as such I would not be treated in such a manner.

I have had a couple of doctors who were jerks, but also a few who had a great demeanor.

The one that stands out as the biggest jerk always spoke to me condescendingly. After a few visits I decided not to come back and found a new doctor.

What happened with the Doc? tell me more information.
Is very common to see narcissism among doctors, they are "walking in the clouds". There is reason why this happens, mainly because of education, training and society.

sunnydog1 is on a distinguished road
Most doctors "not all' think they are Gods, and what they say goes. Why? I don't know, but I also have had a few that were just complete morrons, and like mentioned above I never went back.
Maybe they think if we work hard and get dirty at work they can treat you like your a complete jerk.
For what we get charged for a 5 or 10 minute check-up they should at least be VERY friendly, but thats the way it is and nobody will change it.
So the bottom line is if they treat you like dirt once, do like I do and DON"T go back.

The last doctor I went to was very kind and spent a lot of time with me. When she sent my bloodwork results to me, she even wrote a kind note on it. I think she's a rare gem indeed!

Doctors work for me, not the other way around. I hire their expertise just like any other service. If I don't like the customer service I receive, I move on. Their loss.
