BTW if you get some AMDROV from any Garden Center and sprinkle it around the perimeter (not on the mound or the hole) of known fire ant infestations the AMDROV is quite effective in eradicating them. Follow the directions.
I wear flip flops when I walk my dog live in Texas and also am allergic to fire ants I get eaten alive from the ankles down every year but I soak my feet in Epson salt after I get bit it works but something to make them not bite me would be nice

I have wondered about that myself but didn't want to run out and get bit to find out! I found it is also a good sunburn relief. Maybe you could try spritzing some windex on your flip flops. I'm not sure if it will help or not but I'd try it if I got "eaten alive" on every walk.
I know deet will not repel fire ants, a quick wash with soap and water or even windex with ammonia will weaken the acid, probably dab tea tree oil or cortisone on the bite. Other than that if you're going into a known infested area wear good hightop shoes and blouse your pants legs. If you don't mind faded work shoes spraying wasp spray on the outside of them seems to deter them from climbing aboard.
OMG...fire ants are god=awful! They leave blisters, like some sort of pox! And itch and hurt....get rid of the freaking ants! There are treatments to get rid of them...in the meantime, wear shoes...not sandals into grassy areas!
