I dont want to be put to sleep.... im 6'4'' and 300 Lbs and have been reading on the net that people have died while this procedure were in place.... Are there other alternatives than just getting put under?

My wisdom teeth hurt come and go... can you live with them? Im 23 years old and actually it scares me because I breath real hard and Im afraid to go through with it. can someone please relate too me?

The pain would get worse if you don't take them out.
And no they don't have to put you to sleep, but they usually do.

You need to have them taken out. If not, they will damage your other teeth. I have one wisdom tooth that is still in and it was a problem to me for a long time. I can understand your hesitance to have anesthesia, but it will be better to do it that way. My first experience was without it, and it was not a good situation. Check out the oral surgeon very carefully and you will be fine. They can estimate how long the surgery should last and can give you just the right amount of anesthesia. Good luck.

My wisdom teeth came in, impacted and infected as a result (this was true pain), on my 21st birthday, the day before my Differential Equations final.

I went in same day, had three removed with only local anesthesia (the same you get forhaving a cavity filled). Spoke to my professor immediately after (showed up in his office so he could see my swollen cheeks and not think I was lying), deferred my final to the next day. Went on a 10 day vacation to Ft. Lauderdale 3 days after, came back, had the last one done, and that was it. The first day (when three were done simultaneously) I took whatever painkillers/antibiotics they gave me, and slept for pretty much 24 hours. It was sore after that but I was able to focus enough to pass my finals.

That said, I was 5'0", petite, and 97 lbs. If I could do it, I'd certainly hope you could IMO, root canals (and reirrigating a root canal) is worse. If you have a good oral surgeon, the only very uncomfortable part is keeping your mouth open long enough. However, I did not find this to be a good enough reason to be knocked out.

Don't have anesthesia then...

Like one of the posters above, I have had 2 wisdom teeth removed with nothing but a local anesthetic....not entirely pleasant but I've had worse...

I still have my wisdom teeth. God only gave me two. Both of my girls have had theirs removed. Guess I'm just lucky. The dentist says if either of them has a cavity, they are history as there is no room for him to work on them.

I completely understand your fears of anesthesia. I had never been put under before my wisdom teeth and was terrified of it. Ultimately, the only reason I agree to be out for the procedure was because they were severely impacted and the surgeon had to saw through bone.

I put mine off for a long time (till I was 25) and they had been hurting intermittently since I was 20. Have you gotten x-rays taken? If you get x-rays they should be able to tell whether they're impacted-- if they are, it's likely they will start to either hurt worse or cause problems, in which case they'll need to be removed. If that's the case it's better to just get them taken out now, on your terms, then waiting till the last minute and not being as prepared. Since I waited so long, I had to get the one non-impacted one out right before a vacation, and then go in again for anesthesia and to get the others out.

Find a recommendation for a good surgeon, get x-rays, and see what they think.

If I had it to do over again I may have gone without any anesthesia (even though the doc said this would be crazy/torturous)... only because the anesthesia made me nauseous and puking after jaw surgery is horrendous.

I had a tooth extracted a couple of years ago.
I was given a pill to take in the morning of the procedure.
I'm sorry but i can't remember the name of it but it basically put me "out of it" but i was not asleep.
Someone here probably knows what drug i'm talking about.
It also had an amnesiac effect so i didn't remember any of the procedure (which took about an hour) or most of what happened for the rest of the day.
It was a bit disconcerting but also not a bad thing to kinda not be there but not be put under.
I also has a stream of nitris oxide during the "operation".
The combination of both was quite nice actually.
Is this what they call "sedation dentistry"?
So you have other options.
It's a drag to have teeth pulled but you'll be o.k. and feel relieved when it's over.
Just make sure you have a good dentist! Get referrals.
And remember to breathe. If you have anxiety deep breathing is extremely helpful. Try to breathe out just a bit more air than you take in.
Good luck.

You should get them extracted-if they get abscessed they could get infected and cause some serious damage.

I had 2 of my wisdom teeth yanked and I was put under-it was no big deal. I have to get the other two pulled because those are impacted. Trust me, you don't want to wait too long because I did and the pain was EXCRUCIATING. I was a little nervous of the anesthesia at first but in actuality, I'd be more afraid of getting the surgery done while conscious! The worst thing was the pain afterwards-but there's Vicodin for that.

My suggestion is to get it done and over with-don't procrastinate and put it off because you don't want to end up with an infection or an abscess.
