Have asthma, lost my job, and really need health insurance.
I have asthma and lost my job. I desperately need health insurance. I don't know what to do. My unemployment check will only be 240 a week and I have not received any Cobra papers from my employer.

Try contacting your state insurance commissioner. We've been on COBRA for 18 months, and now that it's time to move on we had a lot of trouble finding adequate coverage. One call to the state commissioner put the ball in motion for a new plan.

It's 110% of your health insurance premium.

I can understand being nervous. Is there anyway you can apply for Medicaid?

My COBRA turned out to be cheaper than a private plan so I kept it. But come OCT, 18mos is up and I don't know what I'm going to do. Private plans are more expensive and being over 50 we need healthcare insurance.

Depends on who you work for. When I was on it when we moved down here my employer just charged the same other employees paid for the same coverage.

Sigh, I've been there and it stinks. The COBRA papers do take a while to come but I'd call the insurance person at your previous job and remind them, anyway. For me, the COBRA payments were a heckuva lot less expensive than the state insurance pool plan. They nail you when you have a pre-existing condition.
Good luck to you! I hope you find a new job before you have to pay for very many months of insurance yourself!

If I were you I'd seek out a good Naturopathic doctor who could help you drastically improve if not ELIMINATE your asthma by helping you with diet and antural supplements to strenthen your immune system. If you could get rid of your asthma, your insurance rates would be cut in half. You need to learn how to STOP the production of mucous in your body. Usually Dairy and Wheat are the BIG mucous producers. If you cut out al of these foods for 4 months along with taking the right supplements, you'd probably be able to permanently get rid of your asthma. If you want the name of a Naturopath with 30 years experience curing so-called "incurable" diseases, let me know and I'll forward you the contact info. They do phone appts so your location is not a problem.
