I do both. I go to the gym AND run/jog around the beach with my dogs near my house. As for the gym, it has a raquetball court and that's one of me and my boyfriends favorite pastimes. Kinda hard to build a racquetball court in your house...
I swim often as well, and there is no public pools near where I live. I also get a company discount... I wouldn't pay the $60 a month to join if I didn't.

I have three young adult daughters who live with me part of the time. I kept a membership off and on for several yrs bec they all said they wanted to exercise and worried about their weight. I finally got rid of it bec the number of times they would go just did not justify the cost and they each had other activities they could do. Hope springs eternal.

My opinions:
1- you are paying for it so you are less likely to skip it
2- good machines cost a lot more than most can afford at once
3- you can't be running a treadmill, dropping weights or dance marathon in an apt or dorm
4- just to get out of the house
5- if you like to add weight or switch up its easier
6- gym services machines so you don't have to
7- Personal trainer access
8- more experienced workout people = advice to consider when doing routines
9- they probably take classes on days too (like dancing etc)

I hate the look on people's faces, all together, in the gyms too - a sort of "game face" I can't stand.

Unlike yourself, they're pushing themselves to get the most out of their workouts. I have my game face on when I'm pushing big weights. It helps me crank out more reps and I feel stronger/better afterwards.

I don't consider a gym membership worthless--even if a person is doing the routine you mentioned. Why? I work at home, going to the gym is my daily break. I don't have the room for all the machines the gym has, plus the weights.
And 40 minutes of cardio on a treadmill or elliptical will do a body good. Lowers the blood pressure, gets the ticker running like clockwork.

Lots of folks join and never show up until they cancel. That is needlessly buying a membership.

Why are you focusing on how other people's faces look? I thought we went to the gym to work out and stay healthy. To hell with other people - I am there for myself.
