Yesterday I flew on a 1 hr 42 (aprox) plane ride. I started off in an aisle seat but the flight was pretty empty so I moved to the window seat so I could stretch my legs out a bit. I sat there the whole flight and then with about 30 minutes or so left in the flight we started the descent and very soon after that I just got a stabbing pain in the inner part of my left eye.

To describe it just circle your inner eye up by the bone and down past the bridge of your nose to the bottom bone. In that area. It would stab and then throb. It literally made my eye water and i pretty much tried to push on the area as hard as I could to get it to stop. Didn't work that well. I got up after about 2 minutes of it or so and switched back to my aisle seat and it seemed to stop.

I am starting to feel it again everyonce in awhile again today though not for long duration. It will happen and the let off for awhile.

Anyone know what this could be or why?

I will state that this was my 4th flight of the trip and this was the 1st time I sat by the window.

This sounds like a sinus issue perhaps?
The discomfort might be sinus pressure that you're experiencing that area?
Did you pop your ears while in flight? You know ... yawn and open.
Just a thought.

My thought on this is that it is sinus pressure that you don't notice at ground level, but only when the pressure changes rapidly within the cabin.

Same thing happens to many people having their ears "pop".

Was your left side to the window? Did you lean against the window? I have noticed that sometimes the window glass itself is cold to the touch. Masybe it irritated your sinus?

Left side was to the window. I never leaned against it. Im to scared of flying to do that. I had the slider down most of the time with occasional lifting up to glance out and try to find some lights on the ground.

I was just curious as to if there is some sort of known pressure difference between the window seat and the aisle seat. My first 3 flights I stayed in the aisle and was fine. The last one when I moved to the window, the problem happened.

Nope. You would feel a significant breeze. If you've ever been in the entrance to a cave where there is a pressure difference, the breeze is really strong. The pressure in a plane does change (decrease) up to a certain altitude. Lowering the cabin pressure puts less stress on the metal and extends the working life of the plane. When the descent starts, the pressure is allowed to build back to the air pressure of the airport. That can cause sinus and ear issues, just like diving down a few feet into water.

Hi All
I had the very same problem in the same eye but it has not gotten better for 5 days now and still have headaches in the middle left area of head again still for 5 days after the flight must say however that it was a 10 hour flight and have never experienced anything like this at all we were seated in the middle of the plane. Very painful still and hard to relax taking pain killers now for 5 days and just hope that it starts to abate soon as getting worried if its something nasty or not. did read it could be a sinus problem perhaps and did have a runny nose but not so much blocked ears during flight as I do chew gum. No runny nose now or anything like that just very dry in mouth most mornings. In any case have 8 more week of a holiday so just see how I go.

My daughter gets this every time she flys.

Per a article I read: “It’s called Aerosinusitis, it occurs when there is a difference in the pressure levels inside the cavities of the human body as compared to the air pressure outside it. It then causes a blockage which causes the sinuses to shrink, causing the problem. It can also cause sharp pains all around the face, due to the blockage.”

She takes Ibuprofen and uses decongestant nasal spray before any flight and that prevents the problem.

I take Sudafed starting the day prior to flying, and then throughout the flight. Otherwise, my EARS KILL me...the pain and pressure is awful. Sudafed helps! It has to be the "behind the counter" brand...not the "over the counter" stuff!
