I had the muscle problem with Lipitor (statin) and Zetia (not a statin). I quit taking any cholesterol-lowering drug. I do not have hereditary problems but I am diabetic (type II). When my glucose is under control, so is my entire lipid profile. Just something else to think about!

I take 1000 mg of fish oil and 500 mg of Turmeric a day, no statins for me. I watch what I eat and exercise for 45 minutes a day on the treadmill and weights. I have NO side effects from the fish oil and Turmeric. My husband is on a statin and has had nothing but problems. My doctor quoted some outragious numbers and turns out, those are for "high risk" individuals, diebetics, smokers, over weight. Do a little research on line and you'll find a number that seems right for you.

Red yeast rice did nothing for my numbers. They were the same. I'm taking CO-Q10 now.

Fish oil with omega 3 controls borderline high cholestrol for my husband. The trick is to take it with all you meals and our doctors said to take 2-3 caplets since over the counter supplements are not all the strong. Hope this helps .

Just a note to say that cholesterol levels can be influenced by stress as well; it's not all animal products, heredity etc... Stress is linked to many syndromes and diseases. We need to manage our stress as if our lives depended on it (lol...no pressure).

Thanks for the good information posted here...I don't take statins and never will, I think it's hype and the 'cure' can be, and often is, worse than the 'disease.'

I've seen friends suffer from dizziness and painful muscle inflammation and tears...not for me, thank you very much.

Best to ask your doctor, but if you Google "going off Crestor" you'll find lots of comments and experiences there.

If you go off, will you also reduce your intake of animal products and high fat dairy and drink lots of water, eat more fiber? Exercise? That seems to be a good idea.

My PCP is also a doctor of pharmacy. he told me that I "couldn't possibly be having muscle pain issues from Crestor" and it "doesn't do that". LOL, silly, silly man.

I wouldn't go back to a doctor that was so uninformed. Nobody can know everything but the side effects of statins are common knowledge. Come on!
