Yes, kidney problems can cause back pain but you would have other symptoms as well.

I have back pain about mid way down on either side of my spine. The pain usually is present if I have to pee, especially at night. It sometimes is there without having a full bladder and feels like a pulsating pain. It is not so painful that I have visited the ER but it doesn't feel like a pulled muscle either. In the past I have had an x-ray and cat scan but the didn't see any stones. The only other symptom I can think of is sometimes my stomach is bloated as well. Oh and I do pee about 3 times a night, which is very annoying! but could be normal not sure
I had some back pain once with a mild kidney infection. The pain (in my case and confirmed to be typical by the doctor) moves back and forth from one side to the other. It has been many years since I had this, so I don't remember the details very well. So I would say kidney infection or of course stones as you mentioned.
PS - My stepfather is having some serious kidney problems - suddenly has to cath himself - is very sick - so I might have to start my own kidney thread to ask about that.

Do you have any other symptoms like fatigue, diarrhea, odd colored stools, stomach upset, or blood in urine? How long have you noticed this pain? Have you had this pain in the past? Have you ever had kidney stones before? Do you drink alcohol occasionally or often?
First off--I agree with the above posters...go and see a Dr. My sister just got over a kidney infection and yes, she did experience back pain and having to urinate more often. Much like what you are describing. Sounds like this has been on-going for you?? Seems strange that your Dr. didn't check for an infection while doing these other tests. It could be something easily taken care of but the longer you wait the worse it may get.
I agree I will be going to a new doctor next week so hopefully she can figure it out. It hasn't made it any easier with moving and having to find new doctors
And to answer greenmachine, I never drink and have been having this pain off and on for at least 3 years but it has seemed to get worse lately.
I appreciate everyone's input I myself also like to do my own research before heading off the the Dr., you just have to be you own advocate

Are you sure it's not your back muscles? If you are moving, you are lifting heavy boxes and such. I always have issues with back pain.
