Anyone know the background?

ETA: I shouldn't limit it to Americans, but I can't change the title of this thread.

They are usually more likely to be overweight and to not go to the doctor unlike white people who usually have better access to health care overall and take care of themselves .

What genes does not control ;lifestyle often does is what most research finds.Even with in races there are vast differences in who is succeptable to what because of genes. Then lifestyles vary so much within each group.

I'm a white guy who lives in a black neighborhood in the black part of our city.

I cannot cast stones, because I should take off some weight too. But I do believe that there is both a genetic and a cultural element behind it.

Every once in awhile I get a hankering for some really good food, so I hit up one of the small locally-owned (by African Americans) diners. It is absolutely fantastic food - the best you can find anywhere! But let's be honest, things like Smothered Ribs aren't exactly health food!

Actually there is a very specific reason why African Americans in this country have a tendency to high blood pressure.

During the middle passage - of transporting Africans to North America as slaves - the people who survived were able to do so for a fairly specific reason (ruling out infection, disease, and intentional infliction of death by their captors) - the body needs a certain amount of "salts" that the body needs to retain to survive. Those who had the genetic predisposition to retain these salts had a higher likelihood of surviving the middle passage to America. Couple that genetic tendency that has been passed on with the (then) typical southern diet - lots of pork and foods preserved with salt - plus the now common American oversalted diet and the result is a group of people who have a tendency to high blood pressure eating the worst possible diet for their situation.

The above sweeping generalization may or may not have merit.

Regardless, high blood pressure is genetic on the (black) maternal side of my family. My grandmother is a marathoner; my mother is a triathlete. Both maintain low salt diets and both require blood pressure medication.
Lower collagen production is prevalent in whites, which is why they tend to age more noticeably, losing elastin in the skin. Said aging may be enhanced by sun worship (lifestyle choices, environment) but it's based in genetics.
I would argue that high blood pressure in the black community is rooted in genetics, but may be enhanced by lifestyle choices/environment.

Genetics and diet. Anyone I knew that had BP also was eating like total crap beforehand. I think it may just be partially due to each of those.
