I have a friend who is having something removed from his colon. It is not cancer. He is 53, male, has not had too many health problems. The doctor stated he has done this procedure over a hundred times. I don't know any details beyond this. He had an exam a few months ago because it is recommended if you're 50. They found something.

What is the chance of death from this procedure?
What is the chance of other bad side effects?
Thanks.
probably very little to both questions. Nothing is 100% foolproof, but routine procedures are normally very safe.
A Colectomy is a partial removal of the colon, not having something removed from colon. Are you sure about this procedure? This is known as a colon resection. They cut out the bad part, maybe a foot or so, and then staple or sew the ends together. Sometimes it is more extensive, but I won't go into it now.
In my opinion, abdominal surgery is a serious surgery. Easier for him if it is done laparoscopically. But sometimes it can't be done this way. I had an emergency resection in January and they opened me up from navel to pubic bone. TMI
It is a common surgery, but no surgery is without risks. However, there may be some side effects post surgery. It can take awhile to recoup and get back to a new normal. I'm sure your friend has been told about what he can expect.
He had the surgery on Monday. As of Wed., he felt groggy and is on an IV and still in the hospital. The doctor said the surgery went well. How long would you usually have to be in the hospital?
From what I was told, the colon doesn't like to be disturbed and during surgery sort of goes to sleep. It can take several days for the colon to wake up. They will then begin to give a liquid diet. It's difficult to say how long, but it could be 5-6 days or longer depending on how he progresses.
That's great news. I'm glad he is feeling well enough to go home.
