I too need white noise to sleep and i always use an oscillating fan for years now as the noise of it puts me to sleep easily and also blocks out any background noise at nite i.e. car alarms, train whistle, dog barking etc.

The only downside is wintertime as i usually point it away or i'll wake up freezing at 3:00 a.m.

This may not work for everyone, but how about a sea shell. Place your ear to it and it makes you hear white noise. Try it as the all-natural white-noise machine and free if you can find one at the seaside large enough. About ear-size is probably about right.

I always have to sleep with something on. I have tried most of them...I think a small fan is the best bet. The fans that are portable heaters are the best because for whatever reason they sound the best.

I'm considering the Marpac Sleepmate (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000J1UJWE?ie=UTF8&tag=citydata-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creative ASIN=B000J1UJWE - broken link) but wasn't sure is there was something better out there. Has anyone used the Marpac or can you recommend something better?

Thanks!
NO ONE ever needs a stinking expensive white noise machine!

All anyone need is a simple fan set on high facing a wall to let it drum all night to give just the right level of noise that can be had anywhere very cheaply.

We've used a fan for decades after a friend suggest one to help me sleep when I worked midnight till dawn. Worked like a charm in a house full of very active boys (4) growing up. Now our boys use a fan to help them sleep with the bonus that fans do circulate some air even facing a wall to stir the air.

So try a fan and I'll bet you sleep like a baby.

Why don't you just buy some white noise tracks through iTunes? You can play them on your ipod through headphones or get travel speakers.

You might also want to look into grey noise and brown noise tracks.
