I'm looking for a good white noise machine that's not bulky and easy to pack when traveling (tired of being tired on vacation). My boyfriend currently has a Homedics which works great but I don't need all the extras - just a small machine that will last. I'm considering the Marpac Sleepmate (http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B000J1UJWE?ie=UTF8&tag=citydata-20&linkCode=as2&camp=1789&creative=390957&creative ASIN=B000J1UJWE - broken link) but wasn't sure is there was something better out there. Has anyone used the Marpac or can you recommend something better?

Thanks!

I'm with you. I've had 2 machines, but, neither one have been very good. I only use the rain button, but, it mostly sounds like static, and has a very short loop. I hope someone can recommend one that really sounds like rain with a longer loop. How many sound buttons do you want?

I just carry a small fan and set it up beside the bed, with the air blowing right on my face. The wind rushing over my ears canceld out most of the ringing. It's not working as well now that I'm older, but I still can't sleep without it.

If you can find one The Sharper Image had a GREAT one that is only a bit larger than a deck of cards, was made for travel and has an alarm clock in it as well. We've had one for 6 years! Works great...
I don't know if they make them that small anymore but I did find this one, which is all the same sounds anyway, they are great.

If you like the sound of rain, wouldn't a relaxation CD with the sound of rain work best?

Afterall, the loop would last the length of the CD. If you have a CD player than replays a CD over and over, it would stay on all night long.

Here's a CD with 60 minutes of pure rain: Rain CD - Rain Sounds of Nature

Thanks everyone for their help so far - to clarify, I only need one type of noise which would be like constant white noise (no nature sounds) and needs to be travel friendly so a fan wouldn't work also wouldn't be loud enough to cover maids vacuuming and the usual loud hotel noises. The one from the Sharper Image looks like a good one but I don't need all the extra stuff like alarm clock and sound choices. Ideally something that doesn't have an obvious loop, is small and plugs in would be perfect!

Thanks Hopes, I loved that one. The only thing is I have to have a heavy driving rain, it can even be with thunder. I have to drown my husbands snoring out somewhat. I've looked at cds before, but, all the kids had all the cd players. I'm going to go check some more out.

After you've slept with one of these for as long as I have, You can't sleep without one! I still use mine even though it sounds so much like static.

Wow to think I have a natural noise machine in the summer! Crickets and frogs out back. They should make a machine like that.

I have a small humidifier (Colorado is dry) recommended by my eye Dr, also have an air purifier. They make noise that is like a white noise to me. My husband has a CPAP machine going at night and the peke snores sometimes. I'm surrounded by noises that don't bother me.
