Drink a lot of water to thin out the mucous, apply a very warm wet washcloth to your face, breathe in steam from a bowl of hot water or hot shower, and sleep with your head elevated.

Neti pots are good for rinsing out your nasal passages, and there is an over the counter saline and water rinse called Ocean.

Good luck with this. Sinus infections can be very painful.

Sinus infections are the pits. And people who havent suffered through them often arent too sympathetic. The antibiotic will help clear it up in about a week but, unless you can fix what caused the infection, it may return. Did the doctor give you an antihistamine or decongestant too? Did he refer you to a ENT specialist?

I had terrible sinus infections, one after another, 25 years ago and finally had surgery to fix a deviated septum. The surgeon guaranteed me that would cure the problem. I should have gotten a second opinion but was desperate because of the pain. The frequency and severity of my sinus infections were reduced but not enough to offset the complications of the surgery (I have a large hole in my septum that cant be repaired). I took allergy tests and shots for a while and finally decided, on my own, to cut out dairy products, the apparent prime source of my allergies. Doing that enabled me to live with my dogs and in Houston in relative comfort. I still have to take antihistamines when the pollen count is high but my sinus infections are few and far between nowadays.

thanks Im glad or Im sorry to hear im not alone. I got my own decongestant, I also went out and bought a humidifer for the dryness in the house (its cold and winter here, and dry as heck) I put hydrogen peroxide swab up my nose the side it hurts. This is the worst. The headaches and upper teeth are just painful all day ,all night. Thanks for the ideas.

Texas, terrible story. I cant image living with this longer than a week or two but to go thru this over and over. I never had one and now I do know what this is like. At first I thought it was my teeth!! The radiation of the upper left gum line was just terrible. Like pain in all the teeth, but then it hit me, how can it be all my teeth on one side. Cheek pain too. It just plain stinks. I am going to bed early to sleep and get away from the pain.

Thanks so much both of you!

Steve get some Mucinex it will help things drain.

Get one of those ice bags fill it with warm/hot water put it on your face over your nose area or forehead sit with your head up right and things should start to drain.

At the end of your shower use the salt water you buy in the squeeze bottle dont mix your own I did once and put to much salt lets just say I will never do that again!

Ask the Dr for a perscription nasal spray I did not like nasonex it burned my sinuses I really like flonaise or fluticasone propionate is a no brand and is the same this does not burn and has a nice smell.

If your sinus infection comes back ask the Dr. to give you a longer dose of the antibiotic.

Do you have a ear infection? If so the Mucinex will help with that along with the antibiotic.

I use to get these and they are painful you might also want to get a allergy med I like Zyrtec as it is indoor and outdoor.

Good Luck with this I hope the first round of antibiotics work for you.

You might also want to get some oil of oregano capsules. They will help build your immunity back up.

I've had them off an on for years and yes they suck. I had recently found that a hot water bottle on the face does wonders for the pain relief. I wish I had discovered this years ago! Hope you feel better.

A lot of people have allergies in their youth that come back in their 40's, It can start as that and become a sinus infection. When you have a infection with colored mucus its time to see the doctor .
