I am looking for an inexpensive, portable biofeedback device that gives fairly accurate, live, readings of pulse, respiration to assist in techniques to lower blood pressure, deal with anxiety, etc. does anyone out there have experinces with what is available on the market now?

Oregon Scientific Smart Heart Heart Rate Monitor Watch - Wal-Mart

To take your own resp rate just count your breathing for one minute.

Respiratory rate - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

You can do the 15 second one as well, but I think giving yourself the full minute will help you relax and give you a better reading. Its easier to count your resp rate too, if you put your hand on your heart and watch your hand/arm rise with your natural breath.

If you are breathing too fast after that minute: just inhale slowly through the nose for the count of four. Hold for the count of four. Exhale through the mouth taking the count of four making sure to fully expel the air in your lungs. This will help you get the full deep breath that naturally calms anyone.

But that is why we need a biofeedback interface. When you are an anxious individual or just plain stressed to the max, you can't sit and accurately count respiration/heart rate AND concentrate on lowering same. The idea is about freeing the mind to relax the body. I am starting nursing study and it is evident to me that my husband suffering from ADDHD, PSTD, depression, and hypertension is not going to be able to use justa simple heart rate monitor. Nor is he a good candidate for visualization exercises either. I think the biofeedback device is our best route. I would like to lower my hypertension as well.
