Experience of spinal lipoma in children? (surgery, symptom, surgeon, medical)

Have a friend whose 3 year old has been diagnosed with a spinal lipoma which she is told by a neurosurgeon requires surgery sooner rather than later.
Her daughter is symptom free at the moment but opinion seems to be that as it grows will cause problems.

Anyone either medical or parent have experience/advice re spinal lipomas, early surgical intervention v waiting or anything at all ?

I am a RN so have been helping out with some research etc.
