They are called floaters and it usually is not connected with a "detached" retina.

Many people have them and they do not cause any medical problems per se. It's the vitreous fluid and age, lifestyle, heredity etc...Good link from the Mayo Clinic (FYI).

I don't think anyone wrote that they were related problems. I had had both problems but a detachment is a serious matter and should not be overlooked.

"Usually" meaning certainly not in all cases "Usually".
