On this day in 1945, at 5:29:45 a.m., the Manhattan Project comes to an explosive end as the first atom bomb is successfully tested in Alamogordo, New Mexico.

Plans for the creation of a uranium bomb by the Allies were established as early as 1939, when Italian emigre physicist Enrico Fermi met with U.S. Navy department officials at Columbia University to discuss the use of fissionable materials for military purposes.

The atomic bomb detonated at Alamagordo NM called Trinity was not a uranium bomb but a bomb with a Pu-239 (Plutonium) core. In only a few years, America built the reactors and got the technology to make several pounds of Pu-239 whereas it only had a few milligrams of the stuff in 1941. The bomb exploded was the first Pu bomb the second was exploded August 8, 1945 over Nagasaki. The third was exploded over Bikini Atoll in 1946.

Yes that bomb that made Japan surender was named Little Boy. And the first h-bomb was Ivy Mike! Check out the government test. Amazingly beautiful but for something that's so wrong.
