The American Civil War. The last two are born of ridiculous perceptions, just as it would be if someone named it 'The War on Racism' or 'The Anti-Traitor War.' The only way you can even have a sane discussion of the topic is to use a neutral title that simply describes who was fighting, then proceed to debate endlessly about how it was or wasn't about slavery, who was the aggressor, and every other discussion that has been flogged bloodier than a Mississippi slave's back since I've been on this forum.

The United States Army in the official records called it the War of the Rebellion. Works for me.

The second choice, The War Between the States, is also heavily favored by and biased for Southerners.

It was also a term never in use during the actual Civil War.

The term itself, The War Between the States, does make it appear as if both sides were equals, while the term, The American Civil War, leaves out such notions allowing the student to decide.

In either case wars are usually named after what the winners decide to call them and not the losers.

Agreed.

It seems to me that these threads that repeat over and over have as much to do with people's attitudes and opinions vis-a-vis U.S. politics and society today as they do about this 19th century war.
