I have always thought Greece was particularly interesting. It had a huge impact on the ancient Mediterranean and ancient Greek ideas on philosophy and government still influence Europe and the US today. It's medieval history with the Byzantine Empire and its significance in the modern era with the Truman Doctrine and the conflict between the Soviet Union and the west are also fascinating.
