Every book seems to dance around the subject when it comes to details. Was he periodically picking up prostitutes for sex and were there a lot of them?

It would be easy to misinterpret the motives of a man who had two passions: one was chopping down trees and the other was rescuing prostitutes. The first was for physical exercise and the second was a concern for homeless street prostitutes, some as young as 12 or 13 years old. It's said that Gladstone, who was happily married and the father of eight children, spent a fortune over the years setting up halfway houses for prostitutes in an effort to help them. Apparently there is no evidence that his actions were anything other than altruistic.
