Sorry should have mentioned. 'Their' is Europe's, and 'we' is Australia, who were on the verge of being invaded by Japan. Well several cities were bombed and people were killed so it was the beginning of an invasion. There was panic that this was it, throughout much of 1942. In Singapore, the country of my heritage, the Japanese were already forcing people to learn Japanese as soon as they captured it.

(And I'm glad you mentioned your connection to Singapore. I'd been trying to figure out your heritage from your posts. I'd narrowed it down, but not to Singapore. Mystery solved!  )

I guess 'Singaporean-Australian', but I usually just call myself Australia since I've been here since I was a baby. I'm not ashamed of Singapore, but I don't have many ties to it. I do love Singapore-Malaysian food and spicy Asian food in general though, and have been back a few times now.
