In April, 1945, as Russian and German troops fought — savagely, street-by-street — for control of the German capital, it became increasingly clear that the Allies would win the war in Europe. Not long after the two-week battle ended, 33-year-old LIFE photographer William Vandivert was on the scene, photographing Berlin’s devastated landscape.

Here are some other's that didn't make the cut:

Hitler's Pool Room, where he and Goring would knock balls around while debating future plans. It has come to light that Operation Barbarossa was the result of Hitler having to perform a dare because he scratched on a break.

Hitler's Love Pad, where he and Eva Braun enjoyed intimate moments between Russian shillings.

And of course, the kitchen. A little known secret about Der Fuehrer. He loved to whip up late-night snacks for his honor guard.

Kind of wondering why they tried to blow it up instead of preserving it. It would be a great memorial. Yes, I know why... but it's not a 3rd world country that dosen't have any police or surveillance cameras or whatever may be needed to keep the "admirers" away.

They were pretty funny, but I couldn't get them to upload and was too tired to keep at it.
