Oh btw, Fleet... Fox News guy... WE said the Pledge in school when I was little, and that was just back in the 90's.
We also said the pledge in the early 2000s, when I was in high school.

I don't. Instead, I did a little more research online, and everything I read backed up the Wikipedia article.

That origin was in America. Francis Bellamy was American. All of that happened in the United States. There was a strong socialist/nationalist movement in the United States in the late 1800s/early 1900s. That utopian socialist novel Looking Backward that his brother Edward Bellamy wrote was the 2nd best selling American novel of the 1800s after only Uncle Tom's Cabin.

This not just some claim, this is all easily-verifiable historical fact.

I'm very disappointed with Fleet. First of all, he doesn't believe that children should have the right to carry guns to school (obviously very anti-NRA/2nd Amendment), and now it has been brought to our attention that he wants children to recite the words of a socialist every morning. He doesn't deserve to have "Fox News" printed next to his name.

Be more melodramatic.

Yes! My old 1956 Ford Failrlane had a three on the tree but it also had overdrive. Everyone thought I had a 4-speed because I had installed a Hurst floor shifter. Oops though! I'm wandering into the early 1960s here.

Allow me to correct you.

You really think that children should have the right to carry guns to school? (Not counting a gun shop or class or an afternoon gun club with adult supervision). When I was a child, I did not bring a gun to school! Nor did I need one.

Don't try to compare the Pledge of Allegiance with socialism. As I said before, the pledge is to respect and honor the United States of America.

And I have every right to have Fox News printed next to my name.

But this thread is not about I, so it would be a good idea to get back to the subject, okay?

I'm glad I grew up knowing that I needed to be respectful and courteous to adults. I'm glad I grew up before drug use became common, that is, other than alcohol and nicotine. It was an era where college costs were low enough that students could work their way through college with part-time jobs and emerge debt-free. That was a great character builder.

In the aggregate, I'd take the good points of the 1950's (despite the admitted bad points) over what we have now (despite many good points of the present day).
Black people had their place in society in the 50s and homosexuals were in the closet where they belonged.

Personally, I would love to jump in a time machine and go back to that era. It was a wholesome, prosperous period of America's history. Everything started turning upside down in the 60s.

That's cool. The kids won't notice and the Mods don't mind.

And I would be happy if I could just leave where I'm living. I'm here for economic reasons. As bad as this is, I'm happy that I don't live in the 1950s. What irks me are people suggesting that the 50s would have been "better" for me.
Nobody should tell you what would have been better for you.

Typically, when we generally liked a period, we idealize it and forget the bad things about it. It has to have been really bad for the bad things to stand out the most in our memory.

Most people get their ideas about the 1950s either from unrealistic TV sitcoms, or history that emphasizes the negative.

Are we a better society today? I honestly don't know. Certainly some things have improved, but other things have gotten worse. People looking back on this period in history are going to find a lot to criticize about us, just as many look back critically on periods like the 1950s.
