OMG! OMG! OMG! They found the earliest recorded use of OMG!

It was in a letter written to Winston Churchill by Admiral Lord fisher in 1917. This is the coolest thing I've ever heard. They mentioned it on the news yesterday.

Sir Winston is a marvelous source of quotations, both serious and humerous. Often overlooked is the fact that he was half American, his mother being Lady Randolph Churchill, born Jeanette Jerome in New York.

Fisher was a very interesting guy, one who by force of will almost single-handedly transformed the British Navy in organization, training, armaments, and tactics. I think one of the most interesting What Ifs of history would have been the Battle of Jutland had Fisher not continually strived to upgrade the fleet's fighting capability. His letters were very emphatic with constant underlining and exclamation points. So his coinage of OMG is not that huge a surprise.

From what I've read and heard, he wasn't the most pleasant person to be around. You'd have to have thick skin.

There's a really interesting book about him that was written by his youngest daughter. I don't know if most people would enjoy it but I did. I'm snoopy that way and like to know the inside dirt.

I don't think you could have had just one. I'd have bought him the best steak dinner in London to spend a few hours with him and talk. I'd have bought your drinks, if you would just let me sit in and listen.

"Smart News" whoever thay are aren't very good historians. I just found the phrase "oh my God" in Monday, November 15, 1725, of The Boston Gazette in under 30 seconds and I'm sure it dates back much further than that!!!
