I was a student and mainly was concentrating on my studies in 1985. But towards the end of 1985 my father told me about a new technology that he was using called electronic mail to contact his colleagues at other universities.

Not a big story nationally, but all over the news in Chicago, Cathy Webb recanted her testimony from years earlier that Gary Dotson raped her. The ever-grandstanding Gov Jim Thompson presided over hearings eventually freeing (but not exonerating) Dotson. Hijacking of the Achille Lauro preempted other news for a week. Father Martin Jenco kidnapped in Lebanon. In weather news, Chicago had its lowest-ever temperature, -27 on January 20, a record that still stands.

I remember the day the Night Stalker was captured by everyday people in East Los Angeles. It was a Saturday morning. He'd run across the Santa Ana freeway, tried to hijack a car and pushed a woman around in the attempt. People saw him messing with her and went after him. Not because they knew he was the Night Stalker but because he'd been rough with a woman who was minding her own business trying to get in her car. Never. Ever. Mess with the people in East L.A.

It remains unclear whether he was hit over the head with an iron bar before or after they took a good look at him and realized he was the Night Stalker.

Jerry Falwell tries to save a bunch of people from dying from AIDS, but no, being gay and shooting heroin was just too fun, so they died. Religion could save your life in 1985, but everyone spent their money on coke instead, oh wait, not coke, pepsi, the choice of a new generation........generation X.

Bruce Springstein's "Born in the USA" comes out that year, his best work ever. Nintendo overtakes Atari. New TV's now have 2 speakers and stereo sound is introduced, but most CRT sets are still no bigger than 27 inch. Compact discs are getting popular for rich people. Still no on-screen programming for your VCR.

OPEC is falling apart.......cheap gas coming in 1986, 1987, 1988, 1989........

Roger Moore does his last Bond film, A View to a Kill. He was a fantastic Bond, so nice the way he could kill you, and be polite about it. He was a very polished Bond, Sean Connery would just club you with a pipe wrench or something, Roger had class.

Nobody has a cell phone, but many high rollers have a pager. But you could still dial Jenny at 867-5309 from the thousands of pay phones. I think that was about the last year that you could turn to her for the price of a dime.

Girls started dressing up like Madonna, and it was sweet, never before or since had women looked so fine, big hair.

Higher end home stereos had some cool equalizers with sweet graphics for those times, so you could space off and watch that while listening to Pink Floyd.

American cars were junky in 1985, gas was still expensive, why not get yourself a moped ? They were very popular in 1985.

Trouble in El Salvador.......don't go there yankee ! How about a nice trip to Afghanistan instead, to help our muslim allies defeat the commies ?
The 85 Bears were the best!

Add to that, Bruce Springsteen, Larry Bird scoring 60 points in a single game, Jordon winning Rookie of the Year, MacGyver premieres on tv, and Ozzie Guillen wins the AL Rookie of the year.

1985....

A good year. I bought some nice Apple Computer stock that summer, when the price dipped after they fired Steve Jobs.
