I actually received a 5" B+W CRT TV set for one of my birthday presents in 2000. I believe it was on sale for $30 at Radio Shack. I might even still have it.
I remember watching B&W TV in the kitchen on a small set, although we had color on our two other sets.
Because of my circumstances at the time and to my childrens horror.. I still had a black and whilte telly until the Royal Wedding of Charles and Diana.. when I invested in a second hand big box one for the living room... to be honest black and white doesnt bother me at all but it did bother the wee ones who were embarrassed to bring friends in ....

I don't remember kids being embarrassed by black and white TV in 1981. There were several folks in our neighbourhood who had one.
Mine were Patton... even living in a poorer area of Glasgow.. all the houses seem to have them back then...
Not to mention that the vast majority of houses didn't have TVs in every room back then.
