Interesting, since normally a sniper would be using a full-power rife cartridge, I'm guessing it would have been .303 Brit, which is only slightly less powerful than .30 06. That's a lot of recoil for someone 4'7".
If you are interested in this period, Leon Uris' Exodus is a good fictionalized account of the creation of the State of Israel. It was also made into a movie that's been on some of the cable channels in recent months.
I met the lady a few times. I was working on the famous ocean liner RMS Queen Elizabeth 2 (from '94 - '98) and Dr. Ruth managed to score a free cruise every couple of years. You see, Cunard would offer her and her husband (met him too, nice guy, but very quiet and low key) a free cruise in exchange for Dr. Ruth giving a lecture and also being interviewed in the Queen's Room by the Cruise Director.
Dr. Ruth was very friendly and out going and was popular with the crew. She didn't hobnob with the rich passangers but always went out of her way to befriend crew members (like me ... although I was techically a "staff" member not crew.) She went below deck to the Crew Mess and gave lessons on human sexuality. Although a religious Jew - the QE2 had a real synagogue onboard with Bima, Ark, and Torah - Dr. Ruth was especially warm to the gay and lesbian crew members (we had a LOT! In fact the QE2 had a gay bar below decks just for LGBT crew members), with whom she sympathized with.
Honestly I think she was a little nosy and a bit of a busybody; but that was part of her charm. It was my impression she really liked talking about sex and loved telling jokes. I was a member of the "Fo'c'sle Club" which was only for officers and staff and escorted her to the club. The British officers were charmed by her.
