It wouldn't have made any sense for the USA to attack the USSR. They were our ally in WWII. Our war was against Germany, and if it wasn't for the British, I doubt that we would have gotten involved at all. Politically at the time we were a very isolationalist country, Great Britian was our closest friend, and we were helping them before we were officially at war. If Britian wasn't involved we would have never been there...
There was also the little issue of Japan, another war that we were still involved in after the defeat of Germany, and which we were not getting a lot of help from anyone else with....

Having visited the American Cemetery in Normandy, the one thing which truly struck me was: The women's names on several headstones. Many women were killed during the landings, working as nurses. Several violated orders not to go to shore, to tend to the wounded. True hero's in every sense of the word.
