There always seem to be differing answers on this, and never a set standard. I've always believed 90-94 was early, 95-97 was mid, and 98-99 was late. However recently I've heard that '94 was mid 90s, and that '97 was late 90s, which I guess makes sense, just always thought 5 was in the middle, as taught in math. Is there a correct answer here?

HA^^^^ so true!
Technically the decade divided into thirds would equate to the following (would make a good math problem for junior high school age kids).

Early 90s January 1, 1990 up to May 2, 1993 at 06:36
Mid 90s May 2nd, 1993 06:37 up to Aug 31, 1996 17:24
Late 90s Aug 31st 1996 17:25 up through Dec 31, 1999

Was looking for a more socially acceptable answer, this is a little too mechanical, although I appreciate your input

The History forum seriously needs a 90s - 21st century subforum.

A very strange thread. Not sure if this is some sort of math question, sociology question, or what. Certainly not history.

And yes, FOR THE LOVE OF GOD, no more threads on the 90's, 80's, "is 2010 like 2000", etc.

Just going off broad rememberances of the era and culture as a kid/teenager.

Early 90s begun really around 1991(1990 was basically the last year of the 80s) and ended when Kurt Cobain shot himself in April 1994.

Mid-90s ended in the summer of 1997--music was shifting again in this era and the stock market was booming.

Late 90s ended January 1, 2000, though the vibe of the era really died with the first dot com crash and then September 11, 2001--which begun a different era.

Early: 1990-92. Largely an extension of the 80s, at least until Grunge hit and the USSR was kaput. Internet was still an underground and university thing. Defined by the fall of socialism and black pop culture becoming more mainstream.

Mid: 1993-96. The core of the grunge and gangsta rap era. Internet was starting to become known but was still mysterious to many people.

Late: 1997-99. The era of teen pop and raunchy comedy like South Park and American Pie. Internet was becoming a big thing as well as cell phones. Texting not so much yet. Fashions were much less "campy" than the rest of the 90s and starting to look fairly similar to the stuff people wear now. I'd say this period lasted until 2001 actually.

I was born in the early 90s but I agree with you. That's spot on. 1997 also marked the premiere of South Park and television ratings. I always felt like the culture of the late 90s and early 2000s was very raunchy compared to even the earlier years of the 90s, and especially compared to the 80s.
